ICANN is a non-profit corporation that was created in 1998 by a coalition of Internet users in business, technical, and academic fields. ICANN is responsible for managing and coordinating the Domain Name System (DNS) to ensure that every address is unique and that Internet users can locate valid addresses. It oversees the distribution of unique IP addresses and domain names, and ensures that each domain name goes to the correct IP address.
